I recently watched a video that involved an eleven-year-old African-American male talking about the history of the N-word. The N-word has been in the mouths of slave masters for hundreds of years before easing it's way through the mouths of black people and other people of other races. I don't want to offend anyone reading this, but the N-word wont stop being said. It's something that will drag on for more generations to come as long as hip hop and rap are still berating the children's ears, and since children are the future, the N-word grows with them.
We are all guilty of saying the word around the wrong crowd. The word has a history that isn't the best. It's been descended upon us through comedians, movies, music, and our friends/family. Why does this word have so many followers attached to it? Because it's a word that is spun many different ways. If you ask a black man why he says "nigga",he simply says that he's referencing his people. But are we niggas? or niggers as the white supremacists still think that we are? We call each other this because to us there's no emotional attachment, no anger, no burning desire to hunt down our own blood because of this word, but when someone of another race says the word towards us, we feel small, inadequate, seperated from the world, and we want to burn the world down. It's ironic because the word "Nigger" stems from the word negro, which is Spanish for Black (which was mentionned in the video by the young man), but in modern times it's translated as being ignorant, and we are ignorant for being offended by the word when someone else says it, and not offended when we say it to each other.
It's sad that this word is still in our daily vocabulary, but at the same time, it's never going to die out. It's a word that constantly brings out a new meaning, and new message, which makes people of non-black cultures "right" to say it, and it's not. I agree that the word should be eliminated, but why is it that black people have to be the first to stop using it? Because we say it more than any other race? no I don't believe that. Black people are 10% the population of North America. There are at least 7-10 times more non-black races in North America, and the word did originate from the europeans, also known as white or caucasian people. Black people use this word loosley without any regards to who is listening to us. There's always someone listening to us, no matter how hard we try to hide it. The awareness that we have is not very good when we're talking amongst ourselves, but sometimes comfort can get the best of us. We say it, then someone hears it, and then it just grows, which is why he have this problem.
The word is meant to be a harmful word, but has somehow made it's way to being a positive thing to say without any fear of backlash or retaliation. Are we, as people, that far removed from the slaves days to make it okay for it to say? Some say no, but a majority says yes. It's here to stay, we have to live with what the word means for different people. The ignorance will continue, because if you have no knowledge, then you are limitless as an individual.
The goal of black people is to rise and overcome, to be treated as equals, to show the world that we are naturally intelligent people of a different race, but at the end of the day, when we do rise, overcome, when we are viewed as being a race that is respected throughout,
We're all still N.I.G.G.A's
That's my word, and it STiXX
